‘Editor’s Corner’ is a monthly-ish series highlighting what I’m loving, what I’ve been up to, what’s on my mind and more.
1. We participated in the Donot Stop 5k this month. T ran and I walked/pushed the girls in the stroller. The girls were excited about the doughnuts at the end. Also, the doughnut medal – a shaker with real sprinkles – was super cool.
2. We spectated the Grand Blue Mile as a family and then T and I attended the Drake Relays on Saturday. The weather was good until it wasn’t and we were evacuated about an hour or so before the days events were scheduled to conclude. We needed to get back home so we didn’t wait out the delay but they were able to finish the events later in the evening.
3. We visited Playgrounds Cafe that just opened this month in Waukee. (See above photo). Lake and Etta had a blast playing on the playground side of the space and then enjoyed having a treat and a drink on the café side.
4. Lake attended a couple of fun parties this month. One of her friends had their birthday party at the Des Moines Children’s Museum and she attended a ‘Swiftie Social’ at her dance studio. They made friendship bracelets, played games and danced to Taylor songs.
5. This month I posted some of my Recent Style Purchases. I love everything but if I had to pick a favorite it’s probably these slides.
6. Mother’s Day will be here soon! Check out my Gift Guide if you need some ideas.
7. Be sure to check out this post to read about the craziest news story T has covered in his 25 years working as a photojournalist.
8. It should come as no surprise that I’ve been listening to Taylor’s new album, The Tortured Poets Department, non-stop. My absolute favorite is “loml.” In fact it may have even overtaken “This Is Me Trying” as my all-time favorite Taylor song. I also love “Down Bad,” “The Tortured Poets Department,” “But Daddy I Love Him,” “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me” and “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.”
9. Speaking of Taylor, I’m obsessed with this Khaite dress she wore recently. It’s so stunning and ethereal. Also, how amazing are these TTPD cookies?!
10. I love my White/Tan New Balance 530s so much I got them in Dark Green as well.
11. I started watching Palm Royale which premiered on Apple TV+ last month. I don’t watch too much TV and sometimes when I do it can take me awhile to get through episodes in a timely manner. I’m enjoying it so far and I especially love the fashion/overall aesthetic.
12. Mowing season is here. I got this hat for T for Christmas last year and it’s been working great for him.
13. Currently wearing this blue hue on my nails.
14. Lake graduates from Preschool next month! I know some people think graduations other than high school and college are silly, but I think they’re a fun way to celebrate your child’s accomplishments. I got her this book as her “grad gift.” (I also saw this Graduation Squishmallow which would also be a really cute gift for a young graduate as well).
15. Did you get to see the total solar eclipse? My co-worker brought sunglasses so we were all able to get a glimpse. A couple of people I know drove down to Arkansas which was along the path of totality. On a related note – How cool is this ‘solar eclipse wedding?’
16. I’m not a big MLB fan like T, but I really like Corey Seager. Obviously he’s a phenomenal baseball player, but I’ve always been most impressed with his humility and the way he carries himself. I thought this article – primarily about his swing – was interesting.
17. Like a lot of kids, Lake and Etta really like mac and cheese. Their current favorites are Trader Joe’s Organic Shells & White Cheddar Macaroni & Cheese and Goodles Twist My Parm Asiago and Parmesan Protein Mac & Cheese. (There are other flavors of Goodles as well). I like adding ground beef to the former and the latter already has protein which is a plus.
19. I saw this book on the Anthropologie Web site last month, but it sold out quickly. Fortunately I found it on Amazon and purchased it there. Lake loves it and it’s great for fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. I also came across this book which would be great when she learns how to tie her shoe laces.
20. Have you heard of mouth taping for sleep? I heard about it awhile ago but just recently tried it out for myself. There are various benefits but the main goal is to force nose breathing as you sleep. I’m still up in the air on if it’s something I’ll do on a regular basis. I used this tape and it stayed on well and was easy to remove.
21. The sweet friendship story of a widowed man and a little girl.
22. I cannot believe it’s been 13 years. I never stop praying for justice for my friend Ashley and her family.
23. And lastly, ONE GOOD QUOTE:
“Is the situation actually complicated or is it really quite straightforward, but you’re making it complicated because it requires a lot of courage to make the straightforward decision?”
-JAMES CLEAR
Hope you have a marvelous May!
