Today is Parents’ Day, so I thought it would be the perfect time to post one of my favorite readings on the subject.
Brené Brown is a researcher and storyteller who has spent the past two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame and empathy. I discovered her on YouTube when I watched her TED Talk on ‘The Power of Vulnerability,’ which is one of the most-watched TED Talks ever.
Brown has authored several books but one of her most popular is called Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent and Lead. In the book, there’s a passage she calls “The Wholehearted Parenting Manifesto.” In her words: “I use the manifesto as a touchstone, a prayer, and a meditation when I’m wrestling with vulnerability or when I’ve got that “never enough” fear.”
I absolutely love this manifesto and re-read it often as a reminder for both myself and my family.
