Today is Parents’ Day, so I thought it would be the perfect time to post one of my favorite readings on the subject.
Brené Brown is a researcher and storyteller who’s spent the past two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame and empathy. I discovered her on YouTube when I saw her TED Talk on ‘The Power of Vulnerability,’ which is one of the most watched TED Talks ever.
Brown has authored several books but one of her most popular is called Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent and Lead. In the book, there’s a passage she calls “The Wholehearted Parenting Manifesto.” In her words: “I use the manifesto as a touchstone, a prayer, and a meditation when I’m wrestling with vulnerability or when I’ve got that “never enough” fear.”
I absolutely love this manifesto and re-read it often as a reminder for both myself and my family.
