As a mom of a baby and a toddler, I’ve discovered that packing a diaper bag can be a bit of an art form. While I want to pack all of the essentials and be well prepared, I also want to pack minimally because, well, it makes the bag lighter and much less cluttered!
After some trial and error, I’ve found a happy medium of what works really well in terms of being well prepared but not overpacked.

The items listed below are what I’d take for a short outing, like going out to eat, going to the park or going shopping. If we were going to be somewhere all day or overnight, then I might pack a little more.
I also want to mention the option to keep some items that won’t be adversely affected by extreme temps, such as clothes, blankets and toys in your vehicle. Then you can have them handy if you need them but not have them take up space in your diaper bag.
I used the Fawn diaper bag when Lake was a baby and am still using it now with two kiddos.
FOR ETTA (BABY)
- Changing mat
- Disposable changing pads
- Diapers
- Wipes
- Extra clothes – two to three sets depending how long we’ll be out
- A few small toys – definitely Sophie!
- Bottles (with warm water)
- Breastmilk and/or formula
- Burp cloth – I think cloth diapers work the best/are the most absorbent
- Diaper disposal bags
- Bib
- Spoon
- Food/Snacks
- Portable sound machine
- Blanket
FOR LAKE (TODDLER)
- Extra clothes – shirts, pants, underwear and socks
- Diapers – Even though she’s potty trained, I toss in a couple of diapers just in case they’re needed
- Snacks
- Sippy cup
- Brush
- Hair ties
- Activities – Water Wow, coloring book or an activity pack – Target’s Dollar Spot has some great ones
FOR ME
- Wallet
- Phone
- Phone charger
- Water
MISC.
- Disposable stick-on placemats
- Hand sanitizer
- Wet-Ones
- Sunblock
- First Aid Kit (travel size)
- Plastic sacks and a few Ziploc bags in assorted sizes
- Pack of travel-size kleenex
- Gum/Mints
